This anthological show brings together 45 years of production, with nearly a hundred carefully selected works. Between geometry and concept, between form and word, between spatial accuracy and poetry. Thus, is the work of Almandrade, an exponent of conceptual art and, today, one of the great names of Brazilian visual arts, with respected production in the main art circuits of the country and internationally recognized.
His work, which begun during the creative era that marked the artistic movement in the 1970s, has a very particular feature: it represents the very universality of art, alternating between constructivist aesthetics, conceptual and experimental art. In Bahia, he was lonely in his commitment to concrete and conceptual art. Still, he had the merit recognized by the movement’s own exponents in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo – Décio Pignatari, Wlademir Dias Pino, Lygia Pape and Hélio Oiticica, for example – and earned critical respect. He has had over 40 solo exhibitions, has participated in several editions of the São Paulo Biennial and has works in important private collections and museums such as the Bahia Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Fine Arts (RJ), the São Paulo Municipal Art Gallery, Rio de Janeiro Art Museum, Rio Grande do Sul Art Museum and National Museum of the Republic (DF).
As a restless artist and experimentalist, many of his drawings, paintings or sculptures result as novelties in that they are unfolding of idealized projects in the field of conceptual art, in search of new conceptions and reflections over time. His strategy is the use of the art object to stimulate thought and provoke reflection based on criteria of rationality, materiality and, not coincidentally, on the economy of visual elements, without letting concepts overlap in artistic creation. This procedure has always differed his from the art produced in Bahia.
Trained architect, Master in Urban Design, Almandrade identifies an international moment of recognition and appreciation of the production developed in two axes, the conceptual and the constructive art. Everything that he has produced and he still produces, in postal art, visual poem and object / poem seems to be seen with other eyes. In the diversity of its supports, there is the strong mark of a production that reinvents itself flirting with the contemporary, with the thought and with the universal aesthetics.
