Galeria Karla Osorio presents the individual exhibition of the artist Rodrigo Garcia Dutra. The show gathers work produced in the last 2 years in various techniques.

About the exhibition

This series or work made by Dutra investigates the moment that accidental genetic mutations have changed the brain connections of the Homo Sapiens species, enabling them to think and communicate using an entirely new type of language. All animals have some form of language. Insects, bees and ants know how to communicate in sophisticated ways, informing each other about the whereabouts of food. Monkey species have a vocal language. Whales and elephants can also emit many distinct sounds. Our language is incredibly versatile. A limited range of sounds and signals can produce an infinite number of sentences. We can consume, store and communicate an extraordinary amount of information creating new patterns of language.

The Serpent Language is a series of codes created from cut-outs on paper folding. These codes intuitively create a supposed abstract and geometric language composing an enigmatic landscape of telepathic communication between human and non-human species. These cuttings were transformed into drawings and then laser cut on wood and painted with acrylic paint. The paintings in oil and acrylic on canvas follow this same pattern of abstract and geometric play, between figure and background, particularly in the history of painting and the Brazilian concrete legacy. The artist demystifies Modernist models, using tools where the construction process is revealed and where decisions are self-evident in the result.

By constructing a collection of facts, found objects, gifts and places he traveled, the artist re-works these elements through drawing, painting, bronze casting, charcoal strokes, video editing and arranging/re-arranging them in space in oder to put these moments or situations in evidence by throwing a new light on them. Born in 1981, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
