Roland Gebhardt

Born in Paramaribo, Suriname in 1939
Educated in Suriname, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Master of Fine Arts. Art Academy of Hamburg 1964

Roland Gebhardt is a sculptor whose minimalist work has been shown around the world and already is included in several prominent collections. Best known for its monolithic sculptures started in the 70s that explore the concept of linear emptyness, some run as large-scale environmental sculptures (eg Wave Hill and Storm King in New York). He was released with the group of minimalist artists including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Richard Serra, Brice Marden and many others, they were together at shows in 70-80 years including ‘The Minimal Tradition’.
In 2005, he createdseries of masks exploring identity and collaborating with artists from other disciplines, culminating with the launch of multi-media piece “The One Tribe” in Art & Technology Center 3LD in New York in 2008. After he conceived sculptural masks in “Dancing Sculpture” series. Since 2013 he conducted experiments on Storm King Art Center and at Institute Chautauqua unveiling spatial relationships built at the intersection of identity, abstract sculpture, and landscape. In 2014, he presented “Trophies” unique collaboration between sculpture, dance and music that explores issues of identity and transformation of the living (Erie Art Museum in Erie, Pennsylvania.

It has always been active in community activities especially related to the preservation of city planning and architecture, especially New York. For many years devoted more to the design, participated in projects in the United States, Europe and Japan. Based on your talent as artist, he also developed a line of sculptural furniture. He holds several patents and design of mechanical products. But he never abandoned his authoral artistic production, which was just no exhibited for decades but whose production is intense. In recent years he developed a series of three-dimensional drawings on paper and striking sculptures in corten steel in the tradition of minimalism and conceptual sculpture.
