Almandrade

São Felipe, Bahia | 1953

Visual artist, architect, master in urban drawing, poet, and professor of art theory at the art workshops of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia and the Palacete das Artes.

He has participated in several group exhibitions, including: the XII, XIII, and XVI São Paulo Biennials; “In Search of Essence” – a special exhibition of the XIX São Paulo Biennial; IV National Salon; Universo do Futebol (MAM/Rio); National Fair (São Paulo); II São Paulo Salon, I International Exhibition of Ephemeral Sculptures (Fortaleza); I Bahia Salon; II National Salon; and received an honorable mention at the I Student Salon in 1972. He has been part of collectives for visual poems, multimedia, and installation projects in Brazil and abroad.

One of the founders of the Bahia Language Study Group, which published the magazine “Semiótica” in 1974. He has held more than thirty solo exhibitions in Salvador, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and São Paulo from 1975 to 2019 and has written for various newspapers and specialized magazines on art, architecture, and urbanism. He has won awards in competitions for plastic art projects for the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia in 1981/82 and the Fundarte Award at the XXXIX Pernambuco Fine Arts Salon in 1986. He has published books of poetry and/or visual works, including: The Sacrifice of Meaning, Obscurities of Laughter, Poems, Night Sweat, Cotton Architecture, Writings on Art, Stone Juggling (poetry).

He won the Copene Prize for Culture and Art in 1997. His works are included in various private and public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, the National Museum of Fine Arts (Rio de Janeiro), the Museum of the City (Salvador), the Afro Museum (São Paulo), the Museum of Art of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre), and the São Paulo Municipal Art Gallery.

Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia in 2000. Exhibition “Thoughts” at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Rio de Janeiro, and participation in a Brazilian visual poetry exhibition at the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin.

Other exhibitions include the solo show “Pequenos Formatos” at the ACBEU gallery in Salvador in 2002; sculptures at the Goethe Institute in Salvador in 2003; paintings at the Sofitel Hotel in Costa do Sauípe, Bahia, in 2004; an installation at the Caixa Cultural Complex, erotic art at the School of Fine Arts of UFBA. He coordinated the “Arte Cidade” workshop at the Goethe Institute in Salvador and curated the exhibition SSA 456 at Galeria da Cidade in Salvador in 2005. He took part in group exhibitions such as “Ode ao Dois de Julho” at Galeria da Cidade and “Ways of Seeing and Understanding Art” at the Museum of Art of Bahia in Salvador in 2006.

Between 1986 and 1990, he worked for the Cultural Foundation of the State of Bahia’s Department of Museums and Plastic Arts, holding positions such as Head of the Division of Plastic Arts and later Deputy Manager of Plastic Arts. He served as a juror in public art competitions, including the Decoration Contest for Salvador City Carnival in 1980, the Art Salon of SESI Cultural Week in Salvador in 1986, and the Selection Commission for Regional Plastic Arts Salons in Bahia (Juazeiro 1997 and 1999). He was a jury member for the Selection and Awarding of the 1st Biennial of Recôncavo (São Félix, 1991), the Selection Commission for Visual Arts Projects 2004-2005 (Funarte, Brasília, 2004), and the Selection Commission for Research Grants in Art Criticism (Funarte, Rio de Janeiro, 2008).

His exhibitions include “The Art of Almandrade” at the Caixa Cultural Center in Salvador (2009) and São Paulo (2012); “Zona Tórida” at the Santander Cultural Center in Recife (2012); “Economy of Assembly” at the Museum of Art of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre (2012); visual poems and an installation at Casa das Rosas in São Paulo (2014); Solo SP-Arte (2015); the 10th MERCOSUL Biennial in Porto Alegre; the 3rd Bahia Biennial; Solo ArteBa – Baró Gallery in Buenos Aires (2016); and paintings, visual poems, installations, drawings, and sculptures at the Karla Osorio Gallery in Brasília (2018).

He also participated in several group exhibitions from 2019 to 2021 in Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Miami (USA), and Évora (Portugal).
