Galeria Karla Osorio presents Saudações, Milton!, the solo exhibition by Brazilian artist R. Trompaz, opening on August 9, 2025, in Brasília. The show features 21 works, many of them recent and previously unseen, including pieces created during the artist’s residency in the capital. Curated by Bruno Bispo, the exhibition title pays homage to the renowned Brazilian geographer Milton Santos, whose critical thinking on urbanization and territory strongly resonates with Trompaz’s artistic practice.
Art, Territory, and Social Critique
Born and raised in the southern outskirts of São Paulo, R. Trompaz brings to Brasília a powerful perspective on social inequality, urban sprawl, and the contradictions of major Brazilian cities. The series Social Segregation Geographically Exposed (SSGE), initiated in 2022, addresses issues of housing, urban displacement, and the consequences of real estate speculation. Trompaz’s work merges personal experience, academic research, and cultural references, particularly the lyrics of the legendary rap group Racionais MC’s. His paintings and drawings evoke signs, landscapes, and situations that highlight tensions between marginalized peripheries and privileged areas, echoing Milton Santos’s critical reflections on Brazilian urbanization.
Curatorial Vision
Curator Bruno Bispo highlights that Trompaz “pays tribute to Milton Santos’ thought and translates the urban experience into paintings, ink and gouache drawings, with an energetic gesture that oscillates between figuration and abstraction.” The artist’s unique style materializes both the excess of information from city life and the silences of exclusion and erasure that characterize Brazilian urban reality. Presenting his work at Brasília’s Plano Piloto, Trompaz draws a sharp parallel between São Paulo and the federal capital, revealing similarities and contradictions between these two urban models.
