Sea That Brings, Also Takes: Exhibition by Guilherme Almeida Curated by Tarcísio Almeida
About the Exhibition
The Karla Osorio Gallery presents “Sea That Brings, Also Takes,” the first exhibition in Brasília by the Bahian artist Guilherme Almeida. Curated by Tarcísio Almeida, the exhibition features 21 recent paintings, most of which are unpublished, resulting from the research initiated with the exhibition “Enjoying the Drum” (Salvador, 2024).
The works in this series explore the coastal life of Bahia through the songs of Dorival Caymmi, especially the album “Canções Praieiras.” The paintings narrate the departure of fishermen to the sea, showing the dangerous and uncertain perspective of life at sea. The work is divided into three layers: Mystery, Departure, and Arrival.
The Importance of Complexity
Tarcísio Almeida, the curator of the exhibition, highlights that Guilherme Almeida uses newspaper clippings and photographs in his paintings, creating a process of documenting contexts, communities, and histories. The works tension the desire to expand the place of painting, inserting new layers of meaning and reinforcing the connection with Bahian culture.
About the Artist
Guilherme Almeida (Salvador, 2000). He lives and works in Bahia, creating paintings, sculptures, and installations. He is part of a generation of artists who bring everyday objects to emphasize and give prominence to the history, memories, and life of the black body.
For a realistic approach to his research, the artist delves into the experience of his body and space, using photo albums, narratives, and familiar objects. He brings real characters to strengthen and publicize the lives of Afro-Brazilian people.
His research presents complex and ironic questions about power and space relations, bringing personalities important in national and international history: intellectuals, activists, artists. He also addresses the values of freedom and beauty of Afro-Brazilian families, the dreams of black children, and common moments of life filled with affection, love, achievements, and unity.
In the series “Destruction of Markets,” the artist mixes languages and uses newspapers to show black figures smiling, sporting gold and silver teeth in a prominent position, overlaying and covering much of the information and newspaper covers, where most of the time black people are in subordinate news.
In 2017, he participated in painting workshops at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, where he began his first works with painting, and in 2018, he started a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the Federal University of Bahia.
