Known for his majestic sculptures and furniture built from wood, the artist arrives in Brasilia with a special selection of 26 works, most of them recent and unpublished. The opening will take place on Saturday, July 27, with a brunch in the gallery gardens and will also occupy two galleries.
About the Exhibition – The texture and the organic as forms
Woods from fallen trees in the forest or old abandoned canoes gain a second life in the hands of the artist and designer, who seeks to redefine materials in a sublime manner. The exhibition explores Hugo França’s trajectory and craftsmanship, gathering a collection of 26 works – sculptures, benches, tables, chairs, etc. Creations from 2014 to current pieces, which are divided between the artist’s studio in Trancoso and his gallery-office in São Paulo. Strong and very heavy (some even over 1 ton!), they are sculpted directly from semi-burned trunks, canoes, and large tree roots, causing a great impact on the viewer. The artist’s perfect technique and unmatched talent are evident and conveyed through the power of the works, which will be on display until September 14 with free admission by appointment.
About the Artist
Hugo França was born in Porto Alegre in 1954. Trained as an engineer, he began developing his project method based on observing nature and human needs. In the 1980s, he moved to Trancoso (BA), where he perceived the degree of waste in wood extraction and use. This experience guided his work. The craftsmanship technique learned by observing the native Pataxós making canoes became his way of concretizing this concept and transforming it into rare and unique pieces, reminiscent of what seemed forgotten by humans. His furniture sculptures are created in a unique way. The pieces result from his sensitivity to perceive functions for forms suggested by nature. The artist forms a creative partnership with nature and ecological cooperation as all the raw material used are forest residues found in deforested and burned areas. Hugo has won numerous awards such as Top Ten Brazil Faz Design from the Museu da Casa Brasileira (1998) and the American publication House & Garden as one of the “50 New Tastemakers” (2007). In 2007, he released a book about his work written by Evelise Grunow and published by Viana & Mosley, and in 2008, the book “The Story of the Tree” – a homonymous project simultaneous to his solo exhibition at the R & Company Gallery in New York. Hugo has works in several collections, including being masterfully present in Inhotim (MG) and Usina de Arte (PE), the two largest sculpture and contemporary art parks in Brazil.
