Galeria Karla Osorio presents solo exhibition “Garden of donations”, by Mario Tagnini
Gallery 1, 2 and 3
Opening, Wednesday, 01 December 2022

Galeria Karla Osorio presents the individual exhibition “Garden of donations” by the artist Mario Tagnini, whose opening will be on December 1st, Wednesday, between 10am-3pm, with the presence of the artist.
Mario Tagnini, heir to the modern building tradition and an architect by training, converts gifts into artistic practice. Today, upon completing 50 years of career, he exposes the gift of the work carried out. His work process begins with a careful selection of gifts, papers that he cuts, superimposes and juxtaposes parallel or perpendicular to the support. Executed with incredible precision, these actions result in subtle reliefs, eventually in optical illusions that refer to the urban vocabulary of buildings, objects and graphic elements.

About the exhibition See below a brief curatorial text

garden of gifts

Plan, volume, shape, color. These concepts of geometric abstraction delimited a field of modern art disputed by movements ranging from Russian constructivism to Brazilian concretism, almost always permeated by architectural and urbanistic issues.
Heir to the modern building tradition and an architect by training, Mario Tagnini converts gifts¹ into artistic practice.
In the exhibition Jardim de divas, Mario Tagnini presents a series of reliefs and sculptures produced in the last three years. The reliefs in the Dons series refer more directly to the artist’s training as an architect. In them, Tagnini approaches the white surface of the support as an area of intersection of cuts and elevations, as if designing a park or a square.
Artist-architect Tagnini has a designer side that is evident both in plan and volume. The delicate interventions of yellow tones on black and white planes give rhythm to Visual Structures, a series in which he proposes games of perception conceived in the strictness of the Ulm School. The white/black, full/empty binary is also present in Dobras, a series produced from cuts in the plane, an emblematic operation of modernist sculpture.
The principle of aggregation governs the Blocos series, in which the reliefs lean towards the object, sometimes resembling facades, sometimes like pieces of furniture, depending on the point from which they are observed. The use of complementary colors induces different visual readings, emphasizing the playful effect of the shapes, which suggest several possible arrangements.
In the Palcos series, Mario Tagnini explores the scenographic aspect of architecture. The procedures adopted in strictly abstract works are placed in this series at the service of representations of isolation, waiting and chance, expressed in urban images that are somewhat absurd, but always funny. Small three-dimensional figures temper the geometric rigor of the scene, either by introducing an ironic commentary on life in big cities or by posing an enigma that the artist invites you to decipher. To participate in Mario Tagnini’s formal games is to receive gifts from his garden.
Enjoy.
