ROLAND GEBHARDT – Semantics of the Void”

 About the exhibit

On Monday, September 04th, at 7 pm, opens the first exhibition from the authentic historic minimalist from Suriname/Netherlands, and a New York resident, Roland Gebhardt (1939). The show gathers decades of works in many medias, some historic (from the 70’s and 80`s), epoch when he participated of institutional exhibitions with artists like Agnes Martin, Carl André, Donald Judd, Richard Serra, Sol Lewitt and others. It will also be shown, unreleased works conceived during his artistic residency in Brasília, in medias such as zinc, aluminum, archival paper, wood, marble and stones. The use of the void has been an central axis of his research for decades. However, for Gebhardt, the cut is a bonding element of. It takes places from the line and the traditional stroke. The tridimensionality is also one of the remarkable characteristics of his work, even is some of his ephemeral sculptures, made some times, out of fruits and vegetables that creates a series of photographs that are also part of the exhibit.

The curatorial text of the show was written by Biagio d’Angelo, an Italian professor at the University of Brasilia, whose text also names the exhibition. According to the author, the Gebhardt’s work has “a methodical and obsessive repetition of objects and themes, a predilection for volumes and their enigmatic nature. The artist “interferes” using cuts and incisions, that suggest that art can still interfere in rigid or organic materials, such as boulders, wood, steel, paper and books. The cuts rewrite the history of the material, denatures it, creating new geometric lines, outside the traditional thought of the drawing, that fill a “void” (there you have the “linear void”, named by the artist), that works as an original connection between volumes or elements…

Gebhardt’s work compels us to rethink our identity in relation to the void. From a suggestive philosophical and ontological reading, the void is not nothing, while the self is still a thinking question. His identity deals with ephemerality. Its semantics is meant to be fulfilled. Minimalism, as conceptual art and ideas, does not cease to question us with insistence on questions that do not belong only to the realm of art history, but redefine our whole concept about the history of culture and its relations in a plural world and without epistemological barriers.

About the artist

Born in Parammaribo, Suriname (1939), educated in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. He is a Master in Fine-Arts by the Art Academy of Hamburg (1964). Gebhardt is a minimalist art by excellence since the 70’s, making artworks in many medias, such as marble, boulders, stell, wood, aluminum and paper. He participated of many group shows with coevals of that time, such as Agnes Martin, Brice Marden, Carl André, Donald Judd, Richard Serra, Sol Lewitt, and others. He is best know for his monolithic sculptures made between 1970-1980, that explore the concept of the linear void, and for large-scale public pieces (ex. Wave Hill and Storm King in New York). He developed a series of mask in exploration of the identity and collaborated with artists of other disciplines, including at the multimedia piece “The Only Tribe” at the Art & Technology Center 3LD in New York (2008). In 2014 he presented the work “Trophies”, which is a unic collaboration between sculpture, dance and music that explores issues of identity and transformation from the living, at the Erie Art Museum in Erie, Pennsylvania. He has been participant of community activities, specially ones related to the preservation of the city, to planning and architecture, mainly in New York. For many years he was dedicated to the Design. He participated in projects in the United States, Europe and Japan. He has never stopped his authorial production as an artist, but ceased showing them for more than 03 decades. In the last few years he started developed a series of tridimensional drawings in paper and sculptures in corten steel, aluminum and zinc, withholding his minimalistic and conceptual sculpture tradition.
